We’re always singing in our house. I say ‘singing’ in the broadest possible sense, as anyone will tell you: I can’t sing. I compound my natural inability with an utter ignorance of more than two or three sentences from any song. Despite an encouraging start, pretty soon I’m in la-la land. We sing to Baby S a lot. Poor Girl.
She seems to have picked up our enthusiasm though. This afternoon, we took her to the Christmas Eve Carol Service. As usual, we were late (always seven minutes) so had to sit in the Naughty Seats at the front. That delighted S because it meant she could look back down the church and see everyone’s face. It gave her something to smile at. There was much singing. She kicked her legs in delight. Perhaps it was because it was in tune. By the third verse of each hymn, Little S was really in the swing of it. She joined in with loud ‘Oooo-eeeee-oooo’s then looked surprised as those nearby stifling their own singing with beaming grins. She carried on gamely and sang a final verse all on her own.
Truly a "joyful noise" unto the Lord! In a few years she can audition for "American Idol" and your comfortable retirement is assured.
